When I was a kid growing up, spring cleaning was as much a part of the season as flowers blooming and grass turning green.  History teaches us that spring cleaning actually dates back as far as the 19th century.  

The history of spring cleaning is interesting.  It was started because kerosene and wood-burning stoves would leave a big mess by the end of winter.  

So here we are just more than 200 years later, and still, we continue this annual tradition across the land. But why?

While we may not have to deal with all the grime and soot of our ancestors, the winter season can still bring its share of messes.  Spring is the perfect time to throw open the windows and let the light and fresh air in.

A Season For Self-Improvement Goals

We’ve spent the last few blog posts talking about self-improvement together.  Now we are going to take a look at how to CRUSH those goals!  While we are 6 weeks into the new year, it is never too late to set new goals.  Now is the time to embrace some positive changes to our routines.  

It is estimated that around 20% of Americans suffer from some form of depression during the months of February and March.  Much of this is due to the holidays being over, bills from the holidays arriving, and the bleak and cold weather. 

This makes it the perfect time to focus on improving an area in your life you’ve been putting off.  

First Things First, Pick A Goal

What is it that you’ve been wanting to do?  Maybe you want to wake up earlier to get a workout in.  Maybe starting taking a 30-minute walk over your lunch hour?  Or learn something new, like a new language or handicraft?  Whatever your goals, choose one thing and make it specific as well as measurable.  S.M.A.R.T goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based.  So go ahead and set some S.M.A.R.T goals for your self-improvement.  It will go a long way to helping you crush your self-improvement goals.  

Then It’s Time To Plan

There’s an old saying that goes, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”  Therefore, take some time now to research and plan exactly what reaching your goal entails. For example, I am planning on running a full iron-man triathlon this year.  I planned out all my workouts for the next 39 weeks, set up my work schedule to make sure I MADE time to do it, and continue to talk with people, coaches, and others along the way.  

Your goal doesn’t have to be huge or involve a lot of work.  A simple plan might be to start walking during your lunch break.  This then might require you to pack a lunch instead of eating in the cafeteria and packing walking shoes if you don’t wear those to work regularly.  The point is, do whatever you can to make reaching for your goals easy and automatic.  


Shout It From the Rooftops

Of course, this is figurative.  Simply put, go tell EVERYONE and ANYONE who will listen what your goal is.  By doing this, you are giving yourself accountability partners.  However, you do need to be willing to give them regular updates on your progress. 

Having someone to check in with help encourage you to keep pushing forward, even when things get hard.  This is a great way to provide motivation as well as assist you to see the real progress you are making in crushing your self-improvement goals.  

So go ahead, and shout it from the rooftops!!

Show Yourself Grace

After telling everyone you know, it may seem like you have to be perfect in the execution of your plan.  While we want to continue to make forward progress, it is just as important to remember that life happens.  If you have a day where you slip up, don’t give up.  No one is perfect and change is hard.  Have a growth mindset and start again the next day.  This is about progress, not perfection.  

Those on your support team will understand.

4 Keys To Success

As we continue to move forward through yet another “interesting” year, I’d like to take some more time to delve into self-improvement. Here are some simple keys to incorporate as our series on self-improvement continues.

I started my new year with a vision board.  I hadn’t made one of these in almost 15 years.  But this year, I felt stuck and I needed a way out.  Vision boards help us to dream big.  Our minds think in pictures, so it’s a perfect way to stay on top of things you’d like to do with your life.  With that in mind, here are a few more tips to help you make the most of your life in 2021.

Write it down.  No really, write it down

We always hear this, yet so often we think it too contrite.  Yet study after study has shown that putting a goal down on paper makes it far more likely to be achieved.  When something is written down, it gives life to the dream.  It helps us envision what that success will look like as well as the work necessary to achieve it.  This is how our self-improvement continues.  

For example, if you want to get into shape, you

 may have a vague idea of what that looks like, but once you have a pen in hand, you start to ask more detailed questions.  How will I go about this?  What sort of plan will I use?  Do I need a coach?  It’s in working out these details that the plans are easier to measure and thus achieve.  

Don’t Go It Alone

For a lot of people exercising alone is depressing.  However, even in a pandemic, you don’t have to go it alone.  From online coaching to zoom workouts with friends, you can find invaluable support to help you build towards your goals.  Post your successes and even your failures (if you are so inclined) on social media and find support from friends and family.  Just know that you don’t HAVE to post anything and everything about your journey.  I for one post only once or maybe twice a month depending on how many goals I reach.  Only share if you really want to and only that which you really want to.  Make sure as well to share with those who will build you up rather than tear you down.  

Be Kind To Yourself


Speaking of being kind…be kind to yourself as well.  Remember this is a journey and it’s about that as much as it is about the destination.  There will be days that don’t go as planned.  That’s ok.  Just reset and go again tomorrow.  It’s not an all or nothing adventure.  Keep a journal or some sort of record of your journey.  That way, when the bad days show up, you can look back on all the progress you’ve already made.  This will help you to overcome the setback and start again with forgiveness to yourself.  

Find What Works For You

No matter how many books, articles, and blogs we read, if we want to be successful, we need to take what works for us, and discard the rest.  There is no fool-proof answer.  The truth is, what works for one person, doesn’t necessarily work for another.  So to truly be successful, find what works for you and just go for it.  It’s ok to change it up as you go along.  Miss a day…it’s ok.  Pick up the next day and keep moving.  The self-improvement journey is a life-long endeavor, so have fun and enjoy it.

Some Simple Keys to Staying Fit in 2021

It’s been more than a month since our new year began and if you’re like most ( i know I am), you may have set some New Year resolutions to get in shape or lose weight.  Maybe you want to run a charitable race this year.  Yet, it is at this time of year that those resolutions turn out to be dreams…ones that we don’t really want to follow.

Life Gets In The Way

The key to maintaining our momentum is to not let the hustle-bustle of life get in the way.  No matter how busy we are, there is always some time to squeeze in a quick workout.  The best part is, you don’t have to go to a gym or even have the equipment to keep going.  Let’s take a look at some at-home workouts that we can do even on the busiest of days.  The simple steps we take now will help us to stay fit in 2021.  

Work Out While You Watch TV

Whether you own a treadmill or only have a small space, make the most of your time in front of the tube and squeeze in a little exercise.  You can do a HITT workout on a treadmill during your favorite 30 minutes sitcom.  Keep it simple and walk during the show (don’t want to miss all those plot twists) and then run during the commercials.  

Get up a little earlier and work out

I know…no one really wants to do this.  But let me tell you something. I started doing this and IT IS AMAZING how much more I get accomplished in a day when I do it.  Another bonus is that nothing interrupts my workout or sidetracks me.  As a result, I miss workouts much less often.  

Now keep in mind that your morning workouts don’t have to be a long-drawn-out process to be effective.  You can find some fun, quick, and easy HIIT or Tabata workouts that are super short and super effective.  Just remember not to do ONLY these types of workouts.  Mix things up and keep it interesting.  Not only will you be more likely to stick with the program, but it is actually better for your body as well.  Having an active rest day is a great way your body heals from the intensity and build muscles for next time. 

Get Fit With Friends

While I personally like to work out alone, I realize it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.  Sometimes we need accountability and that’s ok.  The great thing about working out with friends is that not only can it be more fun, but it’s also a great way to catch up.  

Take a walk.  It’s the easiest form of exercise.  It can be done while in quarantine, and it will not only help you to lose weight if that is a goal, but it will also help with your mental well-being.  Getting out into the fresh air has many benefits to our bodies and our minds.  In turn, when we get back home, we will be more productive.  

If your friends don’t or can’t work out with you and you still need accountability, consider hiring a virtual coach to help you. 

Remember, whatever you do, the most important thing is that you are consistent in your journey.  This will help you to stay fit in 2021.

As a result of Covid-19, we found ourselves at home doing school or work.  Consequently, we also found that multipurpose took on a new meaning.  The kitchen table made a good desk and small spaces in the corner became the perfect “cubicle” for all those online meetings.  Not a lot has changed in the new year. However, now it’s time to put a little more thought and intention into the multi-use areas or our homes.  No matter how long we work or school from home, it can still be our haven. 4 Ways To Practice Self-Care in 2021

Practicing self-care is more important than ever.  Let’s face it, last year was tough.  This year will be better…but it’s up to us to make it that way and that starts with self-care.  It’s not time to overlook this important practice.  With the new year well underway, it’s a perfect time to reinvent yourself and focus on becoming a healthier you.  Here are a few tips:


  It sounds simple, but being consistent with a sleep schedule is one of the best ways to boost your mental and physical health.  Now, I’m not going to tell you that you need 8-9 hours of good sleep a day…I’m not a doctor…I’m a Scentsy consultant.  What I do know is, we are all at different places in our lives.  You do you.  

I don’t do well on 8 full hours of sleep.  I drag all day and just can’t get motivated.  However, over the last year, I have been getting up at 3 am (yes you read that right) and meditating and reading God’s Word to start my day.  I am in such a habit now, that even on the weekends I wake up at 3 am.  I am energized and jump out of bed ready to go.  But that’s me.  Find what works for you and go for it.  

If you have trouble falling asleep, which is quite common, try out Calming Scentsy oils like Lemon Lavender Rain which is great for making a calming environment to drift off to sleep.  



Electronic devices…they are here to stay and they are a part of who we are.  They keep us more connected than ever before and this can be a blessing and a curse.  Know when to say no.  Take a step back from social media and reset yourself before bed.  A nice warm bubble bath is a great way to start to relax.  


Whether we are for it or against it, everything is moving online.  From working at home to doing school at home, the world doesn’t look quite the same anymore.  However, studies show that there are psychological benefits to dressing up even when you’re home alone.  Get dressed in your work attire.  it can help you stay grounded with a clear weekday routine and put you in a productive mindset.  


Fitness has many benefits that help us.  The benefits go beyond just getting in shape or losing a few (or a lot in my case) pounds.  A PubMed study notes, even mild exercise like walking outside will reduce feelings of depression and stress.  To top it off, when we get regular exercise, it will also help to get a better night’s sleep.

Peace In Today’s Hectic Life

We live in a fast-paced world where the motto is more is better and faster is best.  Do you ever sit down to relax or unwind, only to feel guilty for not attacking your to-do list? We’ve all been there; determined to sit, but it never takes long for wandering thoughts and tasks to fill our minds.  Then we’re off and running, abandoning our much-needed rest, to get up and keep go-go-going.

Why don’t we allow ourselves the rest we need to thrive?  It seems like we live in a time where downtime is considered wasted time.  Even kids are scheduled to the max and have no free time for play and imagination.  The high cost of never slowing down not only affects your health but also your ability to recharge, focus and be fully present in your life.

So how do we find peace?

So often we hear of people who FINALLY slow down when they have no other choice.  It’s amazing how the human body will force us to stop at some point.  But why wait until then?  Why allow ourselves to become sick to death before we slow down?  Peace is not just for yogis or the highly enlightened.  In fact, studies have shown that the simple act of meditation can help anyone live a more mindful, connected and focused life. But it takes practice.  As someone who has worked hard to added meditation to my life, I can attest to the challenges of learning to slow down and focus.  But there is hope–hope for me and for you. Many of our behaviors run on habit. When we choose to be more mindful, directing our own thoughts and energy through meditation, we can live more intentionally.

What is meditation, really?

Meditation is an exercise in awareness, training the mind to rest in the present. It’s less about turning your mind completely off, and more about directing your thoughts and focus.

Not only does it strengthen our self-discipline and willpower, but meditation also helps us recognize sources of pain or stress, so we can begin working through them. And as a bonus in our hectic world, it’s also an opportunity to slow down, unplug and enjoy much-needed peace.

What’s the best way to meditate?

The best way is what works best for you. There are as many ways to meditate as there are people doing it.  The best thing to do is just start.  You can start by simply focusing on your breathing.  Just be still and pay attention to every inhale and exhale. This is how I started.  Remember too that your mind will naturally wander, but that’s what meditation is about — training your brain to focus, not drift.  This takes time and patience with yourself.  I find that using soothing music helps as does having a relaxing scent wafting in the air.
